A Taste of Italy with Yankee’s December Wine Club

Introducing our newest addition to the Wine Blog, a quick review of the wines chosen each month for Yankee’s Wine Club.  Here we go with December’s picks.

For December we bring you a taste of Italy with the following:

For our red wine this month, we offer you a 2015 Gran Appasso.  This wine is made from carefully selected and harvested Primitivo grapes from a 50 year old single estate vineyard where vines undergo tremendous stress from strong winds.  After vinification, the Primitivo is blended with dried Negroamaro grapes.  The wine is then aged in French oak barrels.  With a huge fruit flavor and intensity as well as being full bodied and tremendously well balanced, it displays complexity and concentration in a harmonious manner.  Finally, Gran Appasso ends with a long, persistent and truly memorable finish.

This month’s white wine is a 2015 Corte Giara Soave.  It is made from a blend of 80% Garganega and 20% Chardonnay with a fairly intense straw yellow color with green highlights.  This classic Veronese white wine is striking for its fresh and inviting breadth of aromas, sketched out with wild flowers and white peaches as well as vibrant, vegetal notes.  Fresh and simple with a supple body, it is dry and smoothly rounded on the palate along with 100% stainless steel aging.  These features make this wine a nice alternative to drinking Pinot Grigio.
